Several pieces of legislation passed during the recent session of the General Assembly will affect Georgia’s children. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports on five key measures.

Among them is a cellphone ban going into effect in 2026 for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The ban includes all forms of personal electronic devices. While the specific rules will be set by individual school systems, participation is mandatory.

Other measures include:

  • School safety legislation designed to harden defenses against intruders and expand mental health support
  • Child tax credits, including a new $250 state credit
  • Literacy initiatives, such as reading screenings and state-funded literacy coaches to identify developmental challenges
  • Transgender sports ban, which requires Georgia students to compete only in sports that match their sex assigned at birth
