The election bills that may be signed into law

While many election-related bills introduced this session died, including some that caused controversy in Athens, several made it to the governor’s desk. The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections discussed several election-related bills that may be signed by Governor Brian Kemp in the coming weeks.

At a meeting Tuesday, the Board of Elections heard a report from staff about possible changes to electoral rules around the state.

Under one bill, county election offices would no longer handle campaign finance disclosures. Starting in 2027, a state ethics commission would receive those reports.

Another bill would ban the use of digital driver’s licenses as valid forms of voter identification.

A final bill would change the office of judge of magistrate court from a partisan position to a nonpartisan one.

The bills are on Governor Kemp’s desk awaiting signature or veto within the next several weeks.

The presentation of the three bills did not prompt discussion among board members. The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections is set to meet again in early April.
