Governor Brian Kemp signed his signature tort reform legislation into law Monday afternoon.
Kemp says Senate Bill 68 stabilizes insurance costs for businesses and consumers. It aims to limit excessive lawsuits and jury awards.
“Senate Bills 68 and 69 bring Georgia into alignment with neighboring states to protect the rights of both sides to a fair trial,” according to Kemp. “Let me be clear, if you are wronged in this state, you deserved to be made whole and you still can be by bringing your claim before a jury. This legislation protects that very right.”
Critics argue the measure could make it harder for victims to seek compensation.
The second piece of legislation signed by Governor Kemp was SB 69. It would require the disclosure of third-party financing in civil lawsuits.
“SB 68 and 69 simply bring transparency and fairness to a process that has been abused for too long, that has driven up costs for businesses and consumers alike. I’m proud to sign these two bills today and I’m proud of the thoughtfulness and care that went into crafting them.”
Unlike the hotly contested SB 68, Senate Bill 69 passed with bipartisan support in both chambers.
