Cybercrime is on the rise in Georgia and across the country, according to the FBI’s newly released Internet Crime Report 2024. Georgia ranked 11th in internet-related complaints last year, up from 13th in 2023. The state saw potential losses of $420 million, a 40% increase from the previous year.
Nationally, internet crime complaints climbed to nearly 860,000 in 2024, with related losses totaling more than $16.6 billion — up 33% from 2023. The top three cybercrimes by volume of complaints nationwide were phishing/spoofing, extortion, and personal data breaches. However, cryptocurrency-related losses far exceeded those in any other category.
Elderly Georgians are particularly vulnerable to cybercrime. Complaints from adults ages 60 and older surged 71%, with reported losses increasing by 89%. Cryptocurrency-related crimes in Georgia saw an even steeper rise in 2024 — complaints increased by 122%, and estimated losses were up by 66% compared to 2023.
