From bolts to beets: how Winterville’s blacksmith shop will feed the community

For some rural Georgia towns, revitalization starts with looking to the past.

In the Clarke County town of Winterville, the old blacksmith shop, which opened its doors in the 1800s, is getting a facelift. It won’t become a museum, though.

It’s set to become the town’s only grocery store, where a collective of local farmers will sell fresh produce to the residents of this food desert. WUGA’s Emma Auer has more on how the town is looking to the future by preserving the past.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
