On Monday, Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Revenue announced that the state will begin issuing one-time, special tax refunds this week. This is the third time Georgia has returned a portion of its revenue surplus to taxpayers. Previous refunds were handed out in 2022 and 2023.
To be eligible, residents must have filed both the 2023 and 2024 tax returns. Single filers could receive up to $250, heads of household up to $375, and married couples filing jointly, could receive up to $500. Gov. Kemp signed House Bill 112 in order to make the refunds possible.
“Because we’ve managed our state’s resources wisely, we're again able to return money to hardworking Georgians who know how best to use it,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “Along with our acceleration of the largest income tax rate cut in state history, this latest refund is just one more way we’re working to support the people of our state, their families, and their businesses, because that's not the government's money, it's theirs!”
In addition to HB 112, the General Assembly also passed House Bill 111, reducing Georgia’s income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%.
