Since July of 2024, Athens Clarke County Government has seen three interim county managers.
Robert Cowell Jr. has been named the only finalist for the position of county manager for Athens Clarke County. The position has seen several interim managers since the sudden resignation of Blaine Williams in July of 2024.
Cowell has over 30 years of experience in leadership positions, including working as the city manager of Roanoke, VA. He stepped down from that role in June of 2024.
Cowell was selected from approximately 50 candidates by a committee of commissioners. During the next Athens Clarke County Commission special called session on July 15th, Mayor Kelly Girtz will recommend that the Commission formally approve Cowell’s appointment.
