ACC Fire Department says fire marshal impersonator is targeting businesses

The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department said it has received reports of a fire marshal impersonator targeting local businesses.

Local businesses have reported that individuals in the Athens-area are impersonating fire marshals, according to a Facebook post made by the Athens- Clarke County Fire Department on Monday. The Fire Department says the individuals are pressuring business owners and employees to allow them to conduct so-called “inspections,” and then soliciting them for business.

Business owners are urged by the department to ask for credentials if someone claiming to be a fire marshal attempts to perform an inspection. Deputy Fire Marshalls carry an official badge and a county-issued photo ID. It also asks that business owners who suspect they may have been targeted report incidents to their office, which can be reached at 706-613-3365.
