Inmate found dead inside Athens-Clarke County Jail

An inmate has died at the Athens-Clarke County Jail. A release from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office states that on the morning of Tuesday, July 8, jail staff discovered a 31-year-old African American male with an unknown medical issue inside one of the housing units. They entered the unit and found the inmate unresponsive. The staff began life-saving measures and medical personnel were notified.

Emergency Medical Services and the ACC Fire Department arrived and continued resuscitation efforts. Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Following agency protocol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.
