Athens-Clarke County, the surrounding area, and much of north Georgia are under a flood watch through Wednesday evening. According to the National Weather Service, scattered to numerous showers will result in locally heavy rainfall to portions of the area through tonight.
Forecasters say one to two inches of rain with isolated higher amounts could lead to localized flash flooding through Wednesday morning. Some thunderstorms are also possible.
The Athens-Clarke County government has issued a river flood watch for the North Oconee River at College Avenue Bridge and other riverside areas. Water could possibly reach 10 feet or higher Tuesday into Wednesday morning. The bridge may be closed near MLK Parkway and neighboring facilities may be closed if the river rises rapidly. Officials warn that if the water covers the road or touches the bottom of the bridge, the road will be closed, and no vehicles will be permitted to cross the bridge.
Motorists are advised to avoid travel in the affected areas during this time and are urged to drive with caution in any areas with standing water.
