Inner East Athens Neighborhood Association to Hold Quarterly Town Hall

The Inner East Athens Neighborhood Association is holding their quarterly Town Hall meeting on Saturday, August 23, from 11 am until 2 pm. The event will take place at the East Friendship Baptist Church, located at 480 Arch Street.

Organizers say it will provide an opportunity for residents, and others to discuss ongoing issues with the Heidelberg Materials rock quarry, environmental impacts, and neighborhood revitalization efforts.

Dr. Cshanyse Allen is president of the organization.

“This town hall will be interesting, we have a representative from the state coming,” Allen said. “He works with the Fire Marshall’s department over blasting and mining. The Mayor will be there and the City Manager, some commissioners, and I’m not sure if a representative from Heidelberg will be there. They’ve been to our past town halls, and we will have community members.”

Vice president Tammy Foote says blasting at the quarry is resulting in damage to some residences.

“The main concerns that they are having is the condition of their homes due to the blasting from the rock quarry,” according to Foote. “There are some homes that have major, severe damage and we’ve been trying to reach out and work with Heidelberg and the county regarding the repairs. So, maybe we can get some answers as to what some of the resolutions may be.”

WUGA reached out to Heidelberg Materials but received no response as of airtime.
