Update:
University of Georgia officials issued an all clear following a report of an armed shooter Friday evening. Officials said initial evidence suggests the report was a hoax.

UGA issued an alert to students and employees around 8:54 p.m. after a report of an armed shooter in the area of the main library. Police responded rapidly and reported an all-clear message nearly two hours later.

Clark Atlanta University and the University of West Georgia also received false threats of a shooter on campus Friday.

Police are on the scene at the main library on the UGA campus in response to a reported armed shooter. At this time, evidence suggests a hoax.

A police alert has been issued for the University of Georgia campus in Athens after a report of an armed shooter in the area of the main library.

First responders are on the scene and residents are advised to avoid the area. More information will be posted at emergency.uga.edu as it becomes available.

Police ask that you refrain from calling emergency numbers for information.

The main library is located along South Jackson Street.
