Local end-of-life doula hosts community discussions about death

Death can be difficult to discuss—but that’s just what local end-of-life doula Jessica Dukes wants people to do more often. She organizes a monthly destigmatizing discussion at Athentic Brewery with the nationwide movement Death Over Drafts. The next event will be held on September 23rd from 6 to 8 pm. Dukes sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to learn more: are these events morbid, or something else entirely?

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
