The in-store post office at ADD Drug Store on South Lumpkin Street is no longer operating.
After more than 40 years of service in Athens, the facility was shut down by the U. S. Postal Service.
The closure came despite a petition which garnered over 1800 signatures by residents hoping to keep the facility operating and support from 10th district Congressman Mike Collins.
Dozens of contract postal units like the one at Add Drug were closed on September 30th.
Kevin Florence is the Owner and Pharmacist at the location. He spoke with WUGA earlier.
“The Postal Service decided to not renew or terminate several contracts for contract stations around the country,” according to Florence. “We haven’t found a total number but we know it’s going on everywhere.”
Post Office officials say the changes were made as a cost-cutting measure.
