Commissioners vote on new location for Eastside Fire Station

The potential relocation of a fire station in Clarke County has inspired multiple rounds of debate by commissioners over the past several years. Last night, officials decided where it will be located.

The effort to replace an aging east side fire station began in 2019. It reached a definitive step last night as commissioners voted to select its physical location on Lexington Road. Several neighbors of the proposed site stepped forward to oppose the relocation—as well as multiple Eastside residents hoping the move will decrease the amount of time it takes for fire trucks to reach emergencies.

Fire Chief Nate Moss said the selected location would fulfill that goal.

“This is a fifty-year investment,” he said. “What we know is we need a fire station, and we know that we need to improve coverage in areas that are not covered.”

Chief Moss also said the location would best serve the east side as it grows.

The commission voted six to three on a proposal submitted by Commissioner Carol Myers of the 8th District, which she says will address noise, light, and aesthetic concerns presented by neighbors.
