To help avoid the long wait at the vet clinic or animal shelter, people can now begin the process of reuniting lost pets with their families on their own.
The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government Animal Services Department has installed three microchip scanning stations to provide access for people who have found lost pets. Animal Services hopes this will help the shelter avoid unnecessary intakes and focus on animals that need care and attention.
Microchips are rice-sized devices implanted under a pet’s skin that contain an identification number. The scanning stations are located at Athens-Clarke County Animal Serivces, Memorial Park’s dog park, and Southeast Clarke Park’s Wiggley Field dog park.
The microchip stations located at the county animal shelter are available 24/7, while the park locations are available during the hours of operation. To help increase the chance of uniting lost animals with their family, Animal Services will also check pets for microchips and register microchips every Sunday in October from noon until 3 p.m.
