US Senators have reached a deal to bring the 40-day government shutdown to an end. Eight Democratic Senators sided with Republicans on the continuing resolution to fund the government through January. However, both Democratic Senators from Georgia voted against the move.
The US Senate will vote on extending healthcare subsidies in the coming weeks, the sticking point that kept the government on hiatus for over a month. Senator Jon Ossoff said in a statement that over a million Georgians may see their health insurance costs double, and half a million will lose health insurance altogether if the subsidies are not extended.
The decision comes as the Georgia Department of Human Services will give partial payments to those receiving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, by Tuesday. In a statement, DHS says that recipients will get up to 65% of their allotted benefits.
