This evening at 4 p.m., Athens-area community members are gathering for a workshop about data centers at First AME Athens Church.

Concerned Athenians are learning more about what having a data center in their neighborhood may actually look like in a workshop called “Data Centers in My Backyard: What’s Next for Athens?”.

This workshop is the second meeting in a series that Athens Land Trust and the Southern Sustainability Institute are hosting.

The original was held on October 7, the same day that the Mayor and Commission shot down a request to rezone a property on Old Elberton Road to potentially build a data center there. Not only did the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission recommend this denial, but many neighbors spoke out against the request as well.

The Southern Sustainability Institute says this event will promote community conversation about balancing “innovation, sustainability, and growth.”
