Races for ACC Commission District 5, Mayor gain new candidates

Nicole Jordan

Early voting is underway for the Dec. 9 special election to fill the Georgia House District 121 seat recently vacated by Representative Marcus Wiedower.

Republican Mark “Dutch” Guest IV will run against Democrat Eric Gisler in the election, which impacts over 15,000 voters across 10 precincts in southeastern Clarke County and most of Oconee County.

Elections for neighboring House District 120, which will take place in 2026, have broadcaster Kris Kendrick and UGA microbiology professor Chad Paton running on the Republican side. Democrat and Jackson County resident Suzanne Karatassos also recently announced her candidacy.

Additionally, a fifth candidate has emerged for Athens-Clarke County Mayor. Sharon Miller, a senior pastor for AME churches in Athens and Jefferson, announced her intent to seek office in the May 19 election last week.

Commission District 5 in Athens-Clarke County now has two candidates announced: Rick Stanziale, who has served on the county’s Hearings Board and Woodhaven neighborhood association, and Zander Mason, a financial advisor and Athens native who is active with the Rotary Club of Athens.

Athens residents can visit the Georgia My Voter Page or call the ACCGov Elections Department at 706-613-3150 to find out more information about the upcoming elections.
