Birdies on Prince Avenue

Local Athens market Birdies announced on Instagram Sunday that it will be ceasing operations by the end of the year, citing “rising costs and economic uncertainty” as reasons for its closure. The award-winning Prince Avenue shop, known for its coffee, sandwiches and specialty groceries, will close Dec. 28 after two years of business.

“We have barely kept our head above water these past two years, and there is no pathway to profitability in this current climate of rising costs and economic uncertainty,” the post said. “We are committed to working out the rest of the month at full capacity, and hope that you will consider us as a holiday shopping and dining destination.”

The post went on to underscore the necessity of additional sales in the store’s remaining weeks to support staff and pay outstanding bills.

The announcement comes a little over a week after Boulevard-area coffee shop and music venue Buvez announced that it too will close at the end of the year after 8 years in business. See below for the full social media posts.

The full message reads: To our beloved Athens community, it is with great sadness that I have to announce the closure of Birdies on December 28. We have barely kept our head above water these past two years, and there is no pathway to profitability in this current climate of rising costs and economic uncertainty. We are committed to working out the rest of the month at full capacity, and hope that you will consider us as a holiday shopping and dining destination. Every dollar we make will be critical to wind things down, support the team and pay outstanding bills. My team and I have loved every minute of serving you, our amazing customers, and will miss being a part of your day. xoxo
