As people work toward their New Year's resolutions, the ACC Solid Waste Department wants to point out the do’s and don’ts when it comes to recycling in 2026.
The department reminds residents that when recycling jugs and cans, they should not crush these items. Sorters rely on their shape for identification, and crushing can lead to mistakes, such as mixing them with paper recycling and increasing contamination.
All containers should be thoroughly emptied and cleaned out before recycling. If not, leftover food can contaminate not only the container but sometimes the entire load.
Caps need to be screwed on their container because they’re too small to be properly sorted on their own.
