As the U.S. honors slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. today, we look at strides toward racial equality in the nation.
Athenians are joining millions of others around the county. in observing this MLK Jr. holiday. As volunteers gather to participate in a National Day of Service, a recent study focused on racial progress in the U.S. WalletHub writer and analyst Chip Lupo.
“Focus more on the Black, white relationships and how states are doing closing a lot of these socioeconomic and other types of gaps,” according to Lupo.
Lupo says Georgia is among the top ten states when it comes to racial progress.
“Georgia did number one in employment and wealth rank. This is a staggering number; they closed what we call the income gap by 32 percentage points.”
Analysts considered multiple factors in determining the list.
“Employment and wealth, education, social, civic engagement, and health, Lupo said. “We then added 22 element metrics, and we included the median annual household income, standardized test scores, voter turnout, those types of things.”
The holiday is referred to as a day on, not a day off.
