The group behind the controversial redevelopment of the UGA President’s House is calling for the project to be tabled.
The Mayor and Commission of Athens-Clarke County will not consider plans this month to redevelop the former University of Georgia President’s House into a hotel. District 2 Commissioner Melissa Link, whose district covers the historic manor, says that the developer plans to address concerns raised by the Planning Commission and community members.
A group of neighbors called Keep Athens Local, which formed to oppose the hotel plans, says it hopes the developer, Capstone Property Group, will “go back to the drawing board” and attain a historic easement for the building as well as address the “excessive size” of the project. Originally, Capstone planned to build a hotel with over 100 rooms but decreased the size to accommodate around 70 rooms in December.
