Athens Area Homeless Shelter to consolidate, foresees expanding emergency shelter

After turning 40 this year, the Athens Area Homeless Shelter has announced that it will close its operations on Barber Street. It will also relocate all its services to Bray Street, where it already runs a transitional housing program.
Olivia Amato joined WUGA’s Emma Auer for an interview to discuss this monumental change, and how she hopes the transition will help her organization serve more families.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
