Authorities say a burglary suspect left his child at home alone in Jackson County to commit a crime in Athens.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department made an arrest after responding to an alarm call from a business located on South Lumpkin Street on Jan. 23. At the scene, officers found the door partially open and located Benjamin Heaslip above the store’s freezer.

After being taken into custody, the police learned that Heaslip left his 9-year-old child unattended in Commerce, GA. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office later located Heaslip’s child and contacted the Division of Family and Children Services.

Heaslip is faced with several charges, including burglary in the second degree, possession of tools for crime, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, criminal trespass (damage), and obstruction.
