On March 3rd, the mayor and commission will vote whether or not to extend the current moratorium on the establishment of new data centers in Athens-Clarke County.
During last month's Agenda Setting meeting, several community members came out to urge the commission for another pause before an official vote on the city’s data center policies.
This conversation is also happening at the state level. On February 26th, the Georgia Legislative session was set to vote on a bill that would protect residents from bearing the financial burden associated with data center operations. However, the vote was postponed.
Many of Athens-Clarke’s commissioners have requested more research on the way data centers affect communities, saying they wanted to make an informed decision.
