Authorities have identified the Clarke County jail inmate who was found dead in his cell as 45-year-old Joshua Ray Silvers. After multiple attempts to contact the family, his mother was notified.
According to a media release from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 7:03 pm on Sunday, April 5, jail staff were taking a change of uniform to Silvers. When they entered the cell, he was found seated but slumped over and unresponsive.
Despite Silvers receiving lifesaving measures from staff, on-site medical assistance, and EMS attention, he showed no response. The Athens-Clarke-County Coroner arrived and pronounced him deceased. The Georgia Bureau of Investigating is currently investigating the incident.

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate. According to a release from the office, shortly after 7 p.m. on April 5, jail staff were taking a change of uniform to a male resident in the jail. A deputy entered the cell and noticed the man seated, slumped over, and unresponsive to verbal or physical stimulation.
Staff began lifesaving procedures, and on-site medical assistance was contacted. EMS arrived and could not get a response. The Athens-Clarke-County Coroner arrived and pronounced the person deceased.
As of Thursday afternoon, attempts to contact his family were continuing. He is described as a 45-year-old white male. His name will be released pending notification of his family.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of investigation, according to protocol.
