We’ve all heard the term social media influencer. But now, the people all over our screens selling products or showing their lifestyles are getting their due in academia.

Dr. Jessica Leigh Maddox is an Associate Professor of Entertainment and Media Studies at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. She has been named the inaugural editor in chief of the new journal Creator & Influencer Studies.

She sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss her recent achievement and her area of focus—the regulation of professional posting.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
