Tick safety is important every summer, but this summer, it’s a particularly pressing issue. Alpha-Gal Syndrome, an allergy to red meat and other mammal products, can develop through bites from the Lone Star tick, which is the most prevalent tick species in the Southeastern United States.

Cases of Alpha-Gal syndrome are increasingly common, especially in our listening area. UGA Veterinary Entomologist Nancy Hinkle sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss this syndrome and teach us how to stay safe from ticks in the Georgia heat.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
