Races decided in primary runoff elections, Dexter Fisher wins mayoral race

The runoff results are in and Athens voters have selected their new Mayor. County Commissioner Dexter Fisher has defeated District 5 Board of Education Member Tim Denson.
According to results posted by the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, Fisher won with 53% of the vote compared to Denson's 47%. Denson and Fisher were the final two candidates left standing after the May 19 primary. The other candidates include board of education member Dr. LaKeisha Gantt, pastor Sharon Miller, and businesswoman Mara Zuniga.

Two other Clarke County races were decided, with Kimberly Bennet taking on Craig Topple in the District 5 Commission race. Topple came out on top in that race. In the race for the District 9 Commission seat, incumbent Commissioner Ovita Thornton, who was seeking a third term, was defeated by Tracy Smith.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Congressman Mike Collins defeated Governor Brian Kemp’s endorsed candidate Derrick Dooley.
In statewide races, Rick Jackson defeated Lt. Governor Burt Jones in the effort to replace outgoing Governor Kemp. The Lt. Governor’s race saw Greg Dolezal defeating John Kennedy.
