U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock says tariffs imposed by the Trump administration mean Georgia families will spend more on school supplies.
During a press call on Thursday, Senator Warnock cited a new report by his office which states Georgia families will spend more than $130 per child on fourth grade school supplies.
“If you have more than one child, that could be hundreds of dollars,” Senator Warnock said. “Common school supplies like colored pencils and school lunchboxes increased in price by 31% and nearly 27% in only one year. Index cards, notebooks and pencils have also increased in price because of the President’s tariff policy.”
He is pushing legislation to support families.
“And that is why I’m calling on my colleagues to join me in passing the American Family Act and expand the Child Tax Credit to finally give families some relief. Under this legislation families would receive up to $360 per month for kids under six, and $300 per month for kids aged six to 17.”
Warnock said the funds could cover a variety of needs, “That is real money in families’ pockets to cover essential costs like school supplies, tutoring, or childcare.”
Warnock said a temporary expansion of the child tax credit in 2021 lifted 165,000 Georgia children out of poverty, 2.9 million across the country, and cut the national child poverty rate in half.
