In celebration of America’s 250th year, 250 trucks of food are being shipped across the country.
40,000 pounds of food was shipped to Athens August 27, as a part of a collaboration between America250 and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
This delivery is one of 250 truck loads of food that is being shipped across the country to combat food insecurity. In Georgia alone, 1 in 6 people face hunger, according to statistics from Feeding America.
Athens' own Food Bank of Northeast Georgia provides food to 15 counties and this shipment is expected to feed 1,400 individuals for a week.
There to celebrate the shipment at the food bank was Representative Eric Gisler and Senator Frank Ginn who both thanked the representatives of The Church of Latter-Day Saints for their charity.
Also in attendance was the President of The Church of Latter-day Saints in Athens, Dexter Joyner, who praised the church’s efforts.
He said, “All the food that is coming off the food truck today was made, grown, and donated by members of the church and packaged in their own warehouse in Salt Lake City. So it’s unique that volunteers take the time to do that it's not something where we just go buy food and bring it in. It’s made by members of the church because they wanna give.”
