Athens-Clarke County commissioners voted Monday afternoon to take no action on a proposed ordinance that would have allowed valet parking in designated loading zones downtown.
The Government Operations Committee reviewed the proposal following reported interest from businesses near the redeveloped Drake building, including a steakhouse and private club. County staff presented an analysis of downtown loading zones and identified one site with strong potential near East Clayton Street, though most locations were restricted by narrow curb space, sanitation truck access, or a lack of adjacent businesses.
Athens Downtown Development Authority officials said public parking decks and lots have little spare capacity, meaning any valet service would likely require private off-site parking agreements.
Committee members cited concerns about sidewalk access, traffic disruption and fairness to other downtown businesses. One member suggested exploring a centralized rideshare drop-off location as an alternative.
The committee voted unanimously to close out the discussion without giving staff direction to draft an ordinance, effectively ending consideration of downtown valet parking for now.
