UGA played host to 25 of Africa’s bright, emerging Civic Engagement leaders for a six-week Leadership Institute, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The Mandela Washington Fellowship empowers young African leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities, and local community engagement. The Fellowship hosted by UGA was part of a group of 700 Mandela Washington Fellows hosted at 27 educational institutions. The Fellows that were guests on African Perspectives used the opportunities to share details about their civic engagement work in their home countries and how the Mandela Fellowship has equipped them to be greater impact in their respective communities. In addition, the Fellows provided information on the socio-cultural and political developments in their respective countries to better inform the African Perspectives listeners.
