The creations of both a Human Relations Commission and a Public Safety Oversight Committee passed unanimously in last night’s Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission meeting.
The Public Safety Oversight Committee is the local government’s response to community pressure for greater civilian oversight over the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. At last night’s meeting, commissioner Melissa Link read from a letter of support for the creation of the committee from police Chief Cleveland Spruill.
The Human Relations Commission was established to help Athens residents who believe they have been discriminated against navigate the complaint process established by the recently passed non-discrimination ordinance.
