African Perspectives for May 23, 2021

This third episode in May is our second listeners’ appreciation show for the year 2021.

As it is our tradition, we are setting aside this show to appreciate the support of our listeners over the last two decades plus. In addition to recognizing the high value of our time listeners to our show, the episode also highlights the importance of their support to the survival of Athens Public radio station, WUGA.

The episode recognizes the ongoing pandemic, natural catastrophes in India and the violence in the Middle East as possible reasons why gratitude might seem difficult. It however encourages increased optimism and gratitude especially with the positives with COVID vaccines, obliging health guidelines from the CDC, and the wonderful job creation efforts by the Mastercard Foundation Africa and its partners with the Young Africa Works initiative that is creating thousands of jobs for African youths and women, especially in the agribusiness sectors.

The episode rounds up celebrating graduating high school seniors including six members of the Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, Athens, GA who are heading off to colleges across the state of Georgia.

As always, the episode features selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by Africans including selected selections from two selections from the Putumayo presents collections, African Odyssey and African Beat.
