CCSD and OCS Announce Reopening Plans

Clarke County School District

Clarke County School District (CCSD) and Oconee County Schools (OCS) have announced plans to return to school early this fall.

In a statement released Tuesday, CCSD Interim Superintendent Xernona Thomas detailed plans for preschool, elementary, middle, and high school students to resume their education on August 3rd. Students in each school level may be enrolled in traditional in-person or fully online learning, while high school students also may have the option to attend Georgia Virtual School. CCSD unveiled the enhanced safety protocols it will be following, which include social distancing whenever possible and rules to limit visitors. Masks will be encouraged but only required in areas where social distancing is not achievable.

Families are asked to complete a survey by Monday, July 13th to indicate their plans for the school year. Another survey will be sent out for families to make a final commitment on their children’s education by July 17th.

In neighboring Oconee County, the school system is offering two education options, in-person and digital. Within the in-person option, students can either attend fully in-person classes five days a week or in a hybrid model, combining in-person and digital learning. The school district also stated that it will move to fully online classes “in the event of increased community spread” of the virus. Masks are also not required unless social distance cannot be achieved. OCS also listed safety protocols pertaining to social distancing and hygiene practices.
