There has been a recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the State of Georgia,

Over the past few weeks, the number of Coronavirus cases has been steadily creeping upwards. That’s according to Georgia Department of Health numbers.

The seven day rolling case average is currently 743, a little more than double where it was at the end of June. Additionally, the number of people being hospitalized in Georgia for COVID-19 symptoms is 663 up from 423 on June 19th.

Locally, the seven day rolling average for cases in Athens Clarke County is about 8 compared to just 2 in late June. Just 40% of Georgia residents are vaccinated, lower than the national average, and lower than the rate in Florida and North Carolina.

As for the University of Georgia, students are being strongly encouraged to receive a vaccination before the start of classes in August, but the Board of Regents, the University system’s governing body, will not require them.
