Hank Huckaby Dies at 79

Hank Huckaby, a one-time Chancellor of the University System of Georgia and long time servant of the state of Georgia, died Wednesday after suffering a stroke last week.

Huckaby was born in Spaulding County and grew up in Hapeville. He received degrees from Young Harris College and Georgia State University. He taught at several Georgia colleges and universities and served at UGA where he directed the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. When Zell Miller was elected govenor in 1991, he asked Huckaby to be his state budget director. and he became chief financial officer under governor Sonny Perdue. Huckaby was elected to the Georgia house repesentive from Watkinsville for one term when he was appointed as chancellor of the university system. He is survived by his wife Amy, a son and daughter and six grandchildren.
