Area residents are invited to attend the Eberhart Remembrance Vigil tomorrow afternoon. It marks the 100th anniversary of the lynching of a 25-year-old Black man, John Lee Eberhart. John Vodicka is co-coordinator of the volunteer group, Athens Area Court Watch project.
"A white mob broke into the present-day courthouse and in 1921 the jail was located on the top floor. The members of the mob went up to the top floor and brought Mr. Eberhart out of his cell and out of the building and drove him down to the site of his murder just across the Clarke County line. We want to remember this lynching, as awful as it was."
The vigil is Tuesday at noon on the Clarke County courthouse steps. 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery will also be recognized at the event since his death happened on February 23, 2020. Those attending are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.
