Smoke from Mulch Fire in Barrow County Affecting Visibility

Barrow County Emergency Services says a large amount of smoke covering much of the county is not a cause for alarm.

According to a release from the agency, the smoke is from a large mulch fire that has been burning since Saturday at the Cowart Mulch Company. The fire involves mulch, pallets, and other debris in an open area covering about two acres.

The release states no structures are involved or threatened.

Firefighters built a large berm, or raised mound of earth, around the fire and a large ‘moat’ with water inside that berm to prevent spreading. The smoke has affected visibility near Highway 316 at times. No injuries have been reported.

Barrow County authorities will work with the Georgia Environmental Protection Agency to determine what led to the blaze and how to prevent similar occurrences.
