The State Senate Released a Proposed Redistricting Map That Would Shift Athens' Political Geography

gpb.org

The state Senate has been working on congressional redistricting using updated data from the 2020 census and has released a map that would shift Athens’ political geography.

The Senate map proposes putting all of Athens in the 10th district and would move the Jackson county home of Athens gun shop owner and representative for Georgia’s 9th district Andrew Clyde into the 10th district.

Representatives are not required to live within their district, so Clyde will have the choice to run in the newly-mapped 9th district or the 10th district, which will have an open seat next year as Rep. Jody Hice is running for Georgia Secretary of State.

The proposed map comes ahead of the scheduled redistricting session that will begin November 3.
