Suspect Shot and Killed by Athens Police

ACCPD

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has released the name of the person shot and killed by officers Thursday. The suspect is 37-year-old Timothy Statham of Winterville. Police say he was driving a stolen vehicle and fled into the woods as police tried to stop him.

According to a media release, after some negotiation, Statham approached officers in a threatening manner with one hand concealed under his shirt and said he had a gun. Senior Police Officer Jamie Jones used a less-lethal sponge round before three other officers fired at Statham, killing him. They are Sergeant Tim Johnson, Officer First Class Dustin Tilley, and Officer Jerold Rogers. Statham had felony arrest warrants in Jackson and Barrow counties.

No officers were injured during the incident. Due to ACCPD policy, all officers involved have been placed on administrative leave and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting, or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the GBI at 706-552-2309.
