University of Georgia President Jere Morehead recently released a statement entitled "A Path Forward," detailing plans for fostering a more diverse and inclusive community on campus.
President Morehead stated that the university will examine issues related to race, ethnicity, and community through a set of advisory groups, which will provide recommendations for solutions. The Presidential Task Force on Race, Ethnicity, and Community will focus on issues for the upcoming year, while the Planning Committee on Diversity and Inclusive Excellence will address the university’s long-term goals. Both groups are comprised of students, faculty, and staff. President Morehead stated that he will be committing $1 million of funds from the UGA Athletic Association to implement ideas generated by the Presidential Task Force on Race, Ethnicity, and Community.
The university is also seeking public input about building and college names on USG campuses. The form can be filled out online.
President Morehead's statement also announced that the upcoming year marks the sixtieth anniversary of desegregation at UGA. Details about UGA’s celebration of the anniversary are forthcoming. Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Doctor Hamilton E. Holmes, the first black students to attend UGA, enrolled in 1961.
