Last month, Nigeria banned the export of raw cocoa beans as part of a national plan to process crops locally and build domestic industry. They follow Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon, who have also introduced policies to stop shipping raw, unprocessed cocoa beans overseas. Today, we look at the colonial practice of shipping raw goods out of Africa, histories of exploitation, and listen to some Afrobeat along the way.
