Athens News Matters for July 19, 2023

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission met last night in a lengthy meeting that covered SPLOST projects, street renaming, and a host of other issues. WUGA’s Martin Matheny joins Alexia Ridley to recap a busy meeting.

One topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Mayor and Commission meeting was the location of a new east side library. The site selection committee has narrowed the possible locations down to a list of four. District 8 Commissioner Carol Myers joined Alexia to discuss the new library and its four potential locations.

Food insecurity is a problem not just in Athens but in surrounding counties as well. Recently, as part of the Covering Poverty Project at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, WUGA’s Julianne Akers visited a food bank in Oglethorpe County.

A new AI system could improve creativity assessments for young students. To understand how, Audrey Enghauser spoke with Denis Dumas, Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia.

Martin Matheny is WUGA's Program Director and a host and producer of our local news program 'Athens News Matters.'
