Athens News Matters for September 16, 2023

Last week on this show, we heard from Athens-Clarke County Commission Jesse Houle about the county’s proposed plan to reduce and prevent homelessness. On Tuesday, Houle and their colleagues had a chance to discuss the plan as a body in a work session. WUGA’s Martin Matheny down with District 10 commissioner Mike Hamby to get his opinion on the plan, plus the latest on the Classic Center Arena and possible changes to EMS service in the county.

A new chapter is beginning for the Athens only National Historic Landmark, the Taylor-Grady House. 634 Prince is being rebranded as “Landmark Commons” after a small group of volunteers was awarded the lease for the Taylor-Grady House by the ACC Commission. According to the new administrators of Landmark Commons, its new mission is to be an open door for all to experience an inclusive history through education, preservation, and hospitality. We hear from Gwen O’Looney, secretary of the non-profit group administering Landmark Commons.

Martin Matheny is WUGA's Program Director and a host and producer of our local news program 'Athens News Matters.' He started at WUGA in 2012 as a part-time classical music host and still hosts WUGA's longest-running local program 'Night Music' which is heard on WUGA and GPB Classical. He lives in Normaltown with his wife, Shaye and dog, Murphy.
