Athens News Matters for April 6, 2024

Next month, Athens-Clarke County residents will vote on a number of important local races. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sitting down with candidates to hear about their platforms. Melissa Link is the current County Commissioner representing District 2. She’s running for her seat again and sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss her candidacy.

Earlier this week, WUGA’s Emma Auer also sat down with Jason Jacobs, a local entrepreneur who is running against Melissa Link for District 2 Commissioner.

The annual Masters Golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, is one of the nation’s most popular sporting events.

Less well-known are the opportunities the Masters provides to University of Georgia students seeking careers in the hospitality industry.

These UGA students work each year as interns during Masters Week. It’s one of the many ways the university’s Hospitality and Food Industry Management program, part of the College and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, supports Georgia’s rapidly growing hospitality industry.

Professor John Salazar, who manages the program, discusses its benefits with WUGA’s Greg Trevor on the eve of this year’s Masters. It’s the latest segment of the new WUGA series, “A Few Minutes With …” exploring UGA initiatives and their broad benefits to the state of Georgia.

As hospitality and tourism continue to grow in Georgia, industry leaders will share their insights on the latest trends at the Third Annual UGA Hospitality and Tourism Summit, Monday, May 6, in the UGA Georgia Center for Continuing Education and Hotel. You can register at the UGA Events Calendar Site, calendar.uga.edu.
