“I’m getting what I’m looking for:” Athens mayor on next year’s budget

Next year’s county budget has passed, providing funds for everything from new street signs to cardiac monitors in EMS kits. This budget was also created with consensus from an unusual group of commissioners. Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz sat down with WUGA’s Alexia Ridley to review next year’s budget and the process that made it happen. Here’s that conversation now.

Athens’ Juneteenth celebration to highlight history and liberation

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people across the US South were freed. Mokah Jasmine Johnson is the co-founder and president of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, which co-hosts Athens’ Juneteenth Celebration today on College Square from 11 am to 3 pm. She sat down with WUGA’s Alexia Ridley to speak about Juneteenth and what Athenians can expect from today’s event.

24th Annual Hot Corner lets African American entrepreneurs and performers shine

The 24th Annual Hot Corner Festival filled downtown Athens with a celebration of Black community and heritage last weekend. WUGA’s Emma Auer attended the festival, and has this report.

Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
