Georgia Conflict Center to celebrate 15 years of restorative practices in Athens

Restorative practices have deep roots in the Athens community. 15 years ago, the Georgia Conflict Center began teaching restorative practices in some of the county’s institutions and has since expanded its reach.

The organization will hold a community celebration to mark this anniversary on Sunday, April 27th at 5 pm at Terrapin Brewery.

Danny Malec is the Executive Director of the Georgia Conflict Center. Mikhayla Smith is the center’s Senior Program Coordinator and Athens-Clarke County’s second Poet Laureate. They sat down with WUGA’s Emma Auer to discuss the milestone and the organization’s origins.

UGA pre-dental students practice dexterity through art

One of the most important qualities in a dentist is their ability to work effectively with their hands.

The University of Georgia recently launched an innovative initiative that lets UGA’s pre-dental students practice hand-eye coordination and related skills in creative settings. The Lamar Dodd School of Art offers the non-credit Manual Dexterity Through Art certificate program through a partnership with the UGA Pre-Professional Advising Office.

Lise Kalla, advisor in the Pre-Professional Advising Office for UGA’s pre-dentist students, discusses this initiative with WUGA’s Greg Trevor. It’s the latest segment of WUGA’s series, “A Few Minutes With …” exploring university initiatives and their benefits.

The Manual Dexterity Through Art non-credit certificate is funded through a donation on behalf of a dentist.

A pop-up exhibition of student work will be on view and open to the public at the Lamar Dodd School of Art Glass Gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 25. To learn more about the program, contact Lise Kalla at lkalla@uga.edu.
